Thessaloniki: Ein Hort der Normalität | A Shelter for Normality
(For English version see below)
Unsere Favoriten:
- Eine eat and walk Food-Tour mit Despina (Link). Nach diesen fünf Stunden weiß man, was man wo in Thessaloniki schlemmt.
- Umbrellas are not of use here...
- Thessaloniki waterfront: Where everybody gathers around sunset.
- Picking fresh figs from the trees all over the town.
- Beauty at it's best.
- Hagios Demetrios: Byzantine architecture all over the place.
- Historic ruins in the front yards.
- Overlapping ages.
- Start the day with some rooftop yoga.
- Rescue the turtles.
- Taking a break at one of the Chalkidiki beaches...
- ... in boiling warm water.
- Despina gave us a 5 hrs food (and drink) tour through her home town...
- ... at the evacuated food market.
- Just an idea of the many different foods we have tried.
- Big catch.
- And because they eat so much, the city measures distances in kcal.

Recently, „Die Zeit“ published 40 places still to be discovered. For the gourmets amongst our friends: We found number 41, Thessaloniki. It is rarely picturesque and has no Acropolis, but is has charm, history, a seafront and lively inhabitants that are proud of their city. The influence of many diverse cultures not only resulted in a hammam in byzantine design but also in a great variety of food on the menus. We experienced the city as quite yummy. Even the Greek say “If you come to Thessaloniki, you will leave with more weight”. Despite the Euro crisis: The Greek don’t put themselves off hanging out in the many Cafés, bars and restaurants, which makes it wonderful strolling through town…
Our favorites:
- A eat and walk food tour with Despina (Link). After these 5 hours you know what to eat where in Thessaloniki.
- The beaches on Chalkidiki (“like the Caribbeans, just without sharks”). We avoided the heavy traffic in town by taking the ferry to Peraia and using a rental car from there
- Fresh figs from the trees all around the town.

Yes, true that! And it is getting even more exciting now that we travel into countries and cultures we did not went before.
